Sorry, I lost my head

SORRY, I lost my head... Sometimes I get angry but this was not one of those times. There's a reason why that bear lost its head. Months ago, I saw a picture of an ugly stuffed bunny in a New York Times magazine (see pic at bottom). The "ugly bunny" was French and cost $400.00. Turns out "ugly bunny" had a secret pocket for hiding jewelry. It served a useful purpose but at that price, I'd rather buy the jewelry not pay to store it. I decide to make my own jewelry bears using some old beat up toys from around the house. You cannot tell my bears have anything hidden in them when the zippers are closed. They look absolutely grungy! Viva La France.

A brief description on how the bears were made...

One side of zipper is sewn to head. The blue circle is lining to cover the stuffing inside the head.

The other side of the zipper is sewn to body. Blue fabric on the table is to line the hole inside the body. I yanked out enough stuffing for a pocket to fit inside.

My sister and I took a jewelry class while I was visiting Los Angeles last month. We went to Beadniks. It was a lot of fun and time well spent. I made a bracelet (see below). The black beads are a semi precious stone called "hematite". Hematite has healing qualities. I did feel a lot better after that class because I was ready, willing and able to fix my broken jewelry.

The best thing I learned about while there was about "crimp covers". Crimp covers conceal the metal bead you crush to keep the beads from falling of the string. The crimps themselves can look unsightly. I didn't want to wear any of my jewelry because the crimps screamed "homemade". Well, the covers take care of that. They fit right over the bad bits and make everything look polished and professional.

Now that I have fixed all this jewelry, do I wear it? Nope. Jewelry is not my thing. I love bracelets but necklaces make my neck itch (unless they're real gold!) and rings slide off. Makeup is my thing. Lipstick to be exact (I have a project coming up with red lipstick in a microwave). Stay tuned.

Unfinished Business

25 July 2011 - I had a blog before the sock dolls. The blog was called “a project a week”. Each week, I would complete a craft-design project in my studio, photograph it, and then post it.

I was very productive during that period (I made my first sock dolls during that time). After looking around my cluttered studio last month, I’ve decided to restart my “a project a week” blog with a twist. I have many unfinished projects that need to be completed. I made a list of over 82 projects sitting on my shelves. It’s my unfinished business.

“Unfinished Business” will be a bi-weekly blog featuring each project as I finish them. Of course, there are some projects I probably shouldn’t finish and there are more projects that only exist in my sketchbook. Sigh, I got to start somewhere (smile).

And so it begins again…

This week, I am exhibiting at BEA or Book Expo America. Three wonderful friends of mine are helping me at the show. They've asked me to tell them the story of Mad and Pep in Sock World. Here's the "cliff notes" version for them. So what is SOCK WORLD?

Mad gives Pep a hug.

Pepito, or Pep, is a sock dog that lives with a little sock girl, named Madeleine (or Mad, for short). Sabine, the sock cat, is jealous of Pep (she doesn’t have a nickname…she’ll only answer to “Sabine”). She doesn’t like Pep because he gets to sleep on top of the dryer while she sleeps on a cold spot on the floor.

Her jealousy makes her do a bad thing. She tells Pep that socks come in pairs and he is missing his other half. She convinces him that his “sole mate” is stuck in the dryer. Pep looks into the dryer to investigate and Sabine pushes him in. Pep waits in the dark for someone with a thumb to open the door but instead the dryer is turned on. He is spun out of control and into a parallel sock world far from home.

In his first adventure, Circus Sock World, the door opens and he is face to face with a tutu wearing horse named Marly…

In each new adventure, Pep helps his new friends out with their problems as he searches for a way home. Madeleine (being a spunky sock girl) hops into the dryer to find Pep and has her own adventures before they finally reunite. They continue their travels together through each sock world as they learn the value of home and the importance of having (and being) a good friend.

That's it in a nutshell. I wonder what lucky publisher will print the stories so I can share more dolls with the world.

I'm doing a show, not as an attendee, but as an exhibitor. My first show at the Jacob Javitz Convention Center in New York City. The show is BEA, short for "Book Expo America". Buyers attend to purchase books for their stores from publishers. The show runs May 24rd to May 26th, 2011.

I'm going to BEA to see and be seen, to network and hopefully, to find a publisher. My booth will be located in the Children's book section so I will be in a good spot to promote my dolls and books. I'm optimistic but I still have things to do before the show. And I've got two weeks to finish. Mon Dieu.

I finished my first trade show, not as an attendee, but as an exhibitor at "Book Expo America" at the Jacob Javitz Convention Center in New York City. The show is for buyers, libraries and schools to purchase books directly from publishers. The show ran May 24th to May 26th, 2011.

I went to BEA to network and hopefully, find a publisher for my "Sock World" books. I walked around with my friend, Barbara, to the different publisher's to introduce myself. Interest was lukewarm to polite. The publisher's were there to sell not to find new talent but I did get a nibble so there is hope that the show will pay off.

While we walked the show, my friend, Roger, watched the booth and collected business cards. When I returned to the booth, he made it clear that the dolls were the main draw to the booth. We took many names of people interested in purchasing the dolls including a couple of stores.

Overall, I would say the show was average. Time will tell if it was worth the time and expense. I did get several leads but a lot will depend on follow-up (from me) and follow through (from them). After all, a small business only needs one "yes" to move upward. I'm glad I did a trade show but I doubt I will do it again as a sole exhibitor.

Not officially but Mad and Pep did attend Toy Fair 2011 at the Jacob Javitz Convention Center in New York City. My friend, Chris, came with me. Chris is a good person to have riding shot gun. She has a background in design, product development and marketing. She is also very enthusiastic about the dolls and was not shy when it came to asking questions.

Overall, the show was very positive. People were very nice and helpful. It was a real surprise. Why? because I have been to shows before and not gotten this response. There was a major difference. This was Toy Fair, not the Gift Show. My experience attending the Gift show was not always friendly. I was asked to leave a showroom once. (Yes, only once but it was over the top.)

My approach at Toy Fair was different. First, I was representing myself so I took a very direct (therefore, ethical) approach. I introduced myself immediately as a designer, then I asked if the exhibitor licensed designers and, if yes, I asked for a contact name. Maybe, my direct approach yielded better results this time.

Many of the people we met took the time to offer good advice. The most common thread was that I need to publish my book first then license the dolls. I had the good fortune of talking to Lisa of BEA. BEA is the Book Expo America. It's the book buyers convention were publishers show their books. I'll be exhibiting there this Spring.

Summing up: It was a productive day. I am "the little engine that could". If Watty Piper hadn't written that book, I would have. It's extra mile time.

Joke Time: My favorite toy was a Mylar remote control balloon that looked like a fish. My least favorite moment was when my feet started to hurt. Damn concrete floors. I may have to clean up my potty mouth if I'm going to write kid's books.

...Or maybe not. It's joke time -- "A traveling salesman is going door to door. He knocks on a door and a 5 year old answers. The kid is drinking a gin and smoking a cigar. Shocked, the salesman asks, "Are your parents home?" The kid answers back in a sassy tone, "What do you think?"

The Chicago 5, sock dolls, 2010

Introduction: My cousin, Cheryle, in Chicago asked me to make her five sock dolls for Christmas presents. (Bless her for having the common sense to ask me in May). I finished the dolls on time and sent them on their way. They were well received.

The Chicago dolls gave me an opportunity to experiment with new looks and techniques. Each doll also helped me figure out a specific design issue I was having with the dolls.

The first issue was...

Diamond Dog, Sock Doll, 2010

Flopping: The dolls flop and fall whenever I try to pose them without support. When making the dolls, I put the head on last. The result is a body that had no problems sitting upright without a head now nose-dives to the table. As a solution, I purchased plastic pellets to use in the dolls' bottoms. I used the pellets in "Diamond Dog" (above) to see if he would sit still. It didn't work. His upper torso was extra long which made him flop regardless of how heavy his bottom. Summing up, I'm not completely sold on using pellets though I like the beanbag feel.

My next issue was...

Hershey, Sock Doll, 2010

Make-over: I don't have a before picture but this was one ugly sock doll. Then, I gave it a make-over. Now, "Hershey" (above) is one of my favorites. "Hershey" started out as a stand-in for Pep, the sock dog. I had to rush to make it. The sewing on the face was not up to my usual standards (which are insane). Thankfully, I didn't have to send my original doll or the stand-in. I put the stand-in on a shelf but I felt bad because I knew it could look better.

The solution was to take it apart and start over. Usually, I worry about re-making a doll. The damage is sometimes worse when seams that are meant to stay in are pulled out. So, I pretended I was an extra on Bones and worked very carefully. An awkward body is okay. It makes the dolls unique, fun, and endearing but a sloppy face makes them look amateurish and homespun. A cute face is key. "Hershey" got a re-sized body and a cute face. I'll miss him.

On to the next case. The next issue was...

Safety: One of the dolls was for a baby. Choking hazards are a big concern. I like to use buttons especially for the nose. I have over a hundred. They're great but they are dangerous to young children. So how was I going to make a cute doll without using a button. Solution, I used a "suede" patch for the nose and embroidered the eyes. I made the eyes closed like it was sleeping just for fun since most parents would like their baby to take more naps.

The next issue was...

Barry Berry, sock doll, 2010

Scraps: Somehow, I ran out of sock while sewing this little doggie together. "Barry" (above) was missing a tail and two ears. The first set of ears looked too cat-like plus they were different sizes. I could have made the larger ear smaller but the ears still looked like a cat's and Barry was a dog. I didn't have any sock left so I had to use scraps from another sock.

This might sound like an odd dilemma since these are sock dolls, which implies they are made from old, random mismatched socks. But I don't create that way. I purchase new socks and mismatch them with care. This meant, I actually had to finish this doll with an actual mismatched sock. I found two pieces that worked for the ears and the tail. I like Barry because his magenta ears accidentally matched his tongue. Good going, Barry.

The next issue was...

Blue, sock doll, 2010

A Tongue: I learned how to make sock dolls from a book. Well, sort of. I had a lot of trouble following the instructions so the dolls took on a different look. Since then I have made a lot more types of animals than what originally appeared in the book. I decided to look at the book again so I could add more sewing techniques to my repertoire. I believe one should learn the basics before improvising or you get caught in a rut.

Using the book, I gave "Blue" (above), a mouth like the one in the book. I followed the instructions but then I improvised by giving the doll a tongue, which was not in the instructions. I thought the construction of the mouth lends itself to a tongue so I added it. I wouldn't have discovered this if I didn't keep learning.

Summing Up: Well, the Chicago 5 are with their new owners. Too bad, I didn't have time to write a story for them. Maybe, later. I can already imaging them singing as a group made up of five brothers a la Motown.

The Sock Dolls, 2010

My intention in starting this blog was to post weekly projects. But over the past year, I have not been posting much at all. Not because I wasn't working. I just wasn't sharing. Well, today, I'm sharing.

The Project: For the past year, I have been working on a multimedia product line called SOCK WORLD © . The line includes sock dolls, books and coming soon, a video. The books tell the stories of the sock dolls and their adventures traveling from world to world in a dryer (stay with me). As of today, I have made over 30 dolls and have written four stories.

The concept started out modestly when I saw a book on how to make sock dolls. This book was the cutest idea I had seen in a long time (I use to design plush in the late 90's). The sock doll was a fresh approach to plush. Plush had become dated. It was “carnival plush” with fake fur and plastic eyes. I really didn’t see plush moving forward except as a licensing add-on. But sock dolls were cute and new. They also had the added appeal of being "green" and crafty.

I bought the book and made three dolls. They were cute but they didn’t look anything like the dolls in the book, (which is good). I didn’t think much of it until I had my studio open house in October 2009. The dolls were a hit. I posted pictures of them on my blog and received some passing interest. Enough interest for me to move forward with them. I continued making more dolls and wrote a story about them. I found out quickly that people would rather buy a sock doll than make one.

The Plot: The books are illustrated in a "graphic novel" style. Each book conveys a message regarding the importance of home and being a friend. Mad and Pep © are the two stars. Pep is a cute, little gray sock dog and Mad is a spunky, little sock girl. The story starts when Pep is pushed into a dryer and is lost in Sock World ©. Mad jumps into the dryer to look for a her best friend. They spend several adventures apart before finally meet up again. They have more adventures as they look for home. On the way, Pep goes to the Circus, on Safari, and to the Country. The story will concluded when they arrive back home then start again when they return to Sock World © in a modified dryer capable of space travel.

The Marketing: I made decorative display boxes that look like books for the dolls with help of my friend, Christine. Christine also made product boards to show how Sock World © could look as a licensed product. There are a lot of possibilities. That is why the project is called a multimedia project, not a doll line or a book. It’s a lot more.

The Future: Sock World © is growing. I've self-published the first four books. Plans are under way to make a puppet theatre and videotape the first four stories. Four more stories are currently being written with new characters.

Everything is copyrighted so I don’t have to be so tight-lipped anymore. But I would like to add non sock doll projects to my blog again...

The Long and Winding Road

In this clip, Kevin Spacey offers advice to a creative trying to make it. The Cliff Notes version of what was said is that one should enjoy the process whether you make it or not because it is all relevant. It's good advice. I saw him on Broadway once. He came out of the theater in 90 degree weather to sign autographs. I didn't meet him (I was across the street chatting with a friend) but I thought what he did was thoughtful. It was hot that day.

In the meantime, I'm being relevant by getting ready for my Open Studio on the 5th. I'm hosting a Jersey style tea party (which means "instant" or "iced" refreshments). The sock dolls will be on display together for the first time. I contacted a printer regarding my book. And I'm finishing an order for sock dolls for my cousin in Chicago.

I'm trying to enjoy the process as the end result. And have faith that I will succeed. But if I don't, I'm too busy working to notice so in a way, I have succeeded.

My blog is called a "project a week" but lately, I haven't posted any projects. The main reason is that one of my most recent projects is now licensed. Also, the projects are bigger and take longer than a week to complete. And, I can't share a project until the manufacturer has shown them first, either in their catalog or at a trade show.

So, I am very happy to share my first licensed project. It's "Mad about Plaid" for Caffco International. It is a dressed plush line for Christmas. "Plush" is the industry name for "stuffed animals". "Dressed" is the term used when a stuffed animal is wearing clothes. I designed two bears and two deers dressed in Christmas plaids. Caffco used my original handmade samples to develop their own versions for the line. They produced eight dolls based on my original four.

Caffco pays me a royalty (or a licensing fee) to use my original design. This is the legit way for a company to use an independent designer's work. (Hurray for Caffco). Many characters are licensed. For example, Dora the Explorer and Sponge Bob are licensed. I'm working on new characters to license. I'll share more details in another post.

The dolls appear in Caffco's most recent wholesale Christmas catalog for 2010. I am very happy to be able to say, "I'm licensed to design". More catalog shots of my line for Caffco...

The following are the original samples I made and sent to Caffco. They used my overall look and kept a lot of my details. My favorites things are the pipe cleaner ear muffs, the tie-on horns and the bells for noses. They didn't use the bell idea. It can be a choke hazard so one has to be careful.

Summing up, licensing is a lot of work but it is great way to get an original idea out there if one is persistent (and has a good contract). I'm being persistent with my next line that is why the posts are few and far between. Because of this I've decided to rename the blog to "what I did in the studio today". This project was quick. It only took two years! I found an old frame in the attic, stained it blue and painted the raised molding white. Then I put it aside because I didn't know what to put in the frame. Meanwhile, chalkboard paints had increased in popularity. (They are now available as spray paint.) I have seen a lot of homemade chalkboards in fancy frames so I decided to complete this project by making one.

The trouble started right there and then. I had used the original wood backing on the frame to make the chalkboard. Well, it was a piece of old, rough wood. That was okay for its original purpose since it was never suppose to be seen. But it was bad for a chalkboard. It was not smooth like the prefab wood used today. The old wood absorbed the paint nicely and I could write on it but I couldn't erase it. The texture of the wood was too porous and the chalk went right into every nook and cranny. I put the project away again.

Later, it occurred to me that I didn't have to erase the board. I could use the chalk like paint and spray it with polyurethane to make it permanent. I have written down many quotes on paper and put them on display in the studio. The frame could be a message board for a favorite quote and I would have a finished project that I would enjoy seeing everyday. I liked a quote by Howard Aiken. It keeps me from self-censoring the work I share online. The quote is, "Don't worry about people stealing an idea. If it is original, you will have to ram it down their throats." True words indeed.

I posted a review of Stephen King's "On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft" on the book club site, Goodreads. (see below). It is an excellent book to read if you a person making a living using your creative talents. His advice is applicable to all creative occupations.

For example, King emphasizes the importance of reading for writers. This is also good advice for designers and artists. By reading, I have learned how to improve my drawing skills, improve my sewing skills, and learned about intellectual property. Reading also keeps me informed of what's happening in today's culture. Creatives tend to withdraw in order to create. But it is difficult to design in isolation of the world.

This is the first and only Stephen King book I have read. Horror is not my favorite genre. But I respect his talent and I would list this book as one of my favorites. I highly recommend this book.

On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is an excellent book for all creative people, not just writers. The advice is applicable to creatives who work and produce independently. I am a designer and I appreciated the straight forward advice and observations of a prolific and talented writer. His comments on creating situations instead of finished plots was especially useful to my work. It's a worthwhile read.

I will post a new project soon but in the meantime, I am posting another favorite song and video. This time it's a remake of "Don't Go" by Nouvelle Vague. The original song by Yazoo (or Yaz, if you're in the States) was a fast dance song from the 80's. This remake slows down the tempo. It has a feeling that is attractive and ominous at the same time. Nouvelle Vague (translation means "new wave") performs songs from the late 70s to the 80s with a string of female singers backed by a bossa nova beat.

I listen to several Podcasts to find new music. And I also check out the blog, My Favorite Music Online. The writer of this blog has a wide and eclectic taste in music that is not dictated by popular music. Several female singers and European bands are featured as well as classic rock and soul. Links are offered so you can listen to the music firsthand. Enjoy.

Something New, Something Old.

Stephen Malkmus, formerly of Pavement, was interviewed on Sound Opinions recently. Excellent interview. I really enjoyed their music. I'm not into "alternative". I tried it. I own an Arcade Fire CD. But alternative sounds like folk music but more depressing. So I was excited to hear something I like a lot. It was different. The lyrics are interesting and memorable. The music is melodic and the sound is rich. It had depth without being orchestral. Too bad the band broke up 10 years ago. Luckily, they're touring this summer so there's a chance to see them before they disband again. Pavement is playing Vegas in October. Now that's a rock show.

About Sound Opinions: Sound Opinions bills itself as the World's ONLY Rock and Roll talk show. But they play more than rock. I found Rhymefest on Sound Opinions. It's a wide range of new music including interviews with the musicians. It's quality time spent. The show broadcasts on WBEZ in Chicago and is hosted by hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot. WTF Light-boxes, 2010

At the end of each year, I buy Christmas lights on sale. Not for next year's tree but for future projects. I was on the look out for a project when I found one using Christmas lights and a piece of wood to spell out a word (see LINK section below). I didn't have a big piece of wood so I decided to use old cigar boxes instead. Each box would have a letter and I could display them together to spell a word just like alphabet blocks or scramble.

SHORT RANT: I picked a message that reflects my dislike of too much personal technology. I love my computers, my i-pod and my cell phone but I remember the good old days when people either had to call you back or find you in person. Now everybody has several different multimedia ways to track you down - voice mail, e-mail, texting, cell phone, poking, etc. My light boxes sum up my feelings about being so accessible. I love my friends dearly but some days I just want to take a nap with a book. Anyway, I added quotes to the boxes for those of you who aren't up on their TXT abbr. I can display the boxes as a group or individually. They are easy to make. See steps below.

MATERIALS I USED: 3 wood cigar boxes.
3 strings of Christmas lights -- I used earth friendly - low heat lights so I wouldn't make a fire.
Drill with bits.
Press on letters (optional)
Decoupage glue (optional)

HOW I DID IT:

First, find an empty wood box with a lid like an old cigar box. Wood is better than paper because it can support the lights and won't burn. Please note: Even though the lights are cool to touch and are intended to hang on a tree -- DON'T LEAVE THE LIGHT BOXES ON AND UNATTENDED. I repeat. DON'T LEAVE THE LIGHT BOXES ON AND UNATTENDED. If you do, I will text you>:(

The cigar box also had the inside depth I needed for the lights to stay in place. It also had enough room for any excess cord. The box had hinges and a latch which, made it easy to open and shut securely.

Second, make a template of the letter for the front of the box. Make sure that the number of holes are equal (or less than) the number of lights on each cord. Measure carefully the distance between holes so that the holes do not end up too close together. If the holes are too close together, the wood will not be strong enough to take the pressure of the lights pushing through. It might break the wood.

Drill the holes nice and easy.

Third, I carefully drilled the holes into the lid of the box. Cigar boxes aren't too thick so it's important that the drill bit is new (aka sharp) and go slow. Consider the diameter of the holes you will need to drill. I was able to use a standard drill bit. You will need a bit that is slightly larger than the lights (but smaller than the sockets). The lights should resist slightly when pushed through the holes but if they are too loose they won't stay in place.

So far, so good 

It worked. The holes are spaced correctly and they are the right size for the lights. I did the same for the other two boxes.

Fourth, a quote was added to each box using press on letters I found in the scrap-booking section of the craft store. The trick was finding something I liked. An alternative would have been to use decoupage. After placing the letters, I applied a thin coat of decoupage glue to each box to ensure that the letters stay in place.

Fifth, a hole was drilled into the bottom for the cord to come out. Not very neat but I didn't want to push my luck with that drill.

Sixth, the cord was put through the hole. The hole must be large enough to put the lights through but small enough so they won't come out.

Lights pushed through lid. 

Seventh, carefully push the lights through the hole from the inside of the box. Only the bulb should go through. The socket should remain in the box. WARNING: The holes will splinter and break if the lights are forced through. They resisted a little but I didn't break a sweat. The depth of the box allowed for the excess cord to sit inside neatly.

All lights on steady. 

Success! Shut the boxes, plug it in and it's art. The lights had special plugs which allowed me to plug them into one another. That was a bonus because it makes plugging the whole thing in easier.

NEXT TIME: I did have a tense moment with the W light. The holes came close together at the bottom angles. And the cords are green. Green is not my favorite color unless it's sage. Next time white cords instead. Overall, I would do it again.

Long Time; No Write

My new studio on Central Avenue.

It is important to assess one's strengths and weaknesses in relationship to the goals one wants to achieve. One of my strengths is persistence. Many changes (and setbacks) have occurred since my last blog.

First, I moved into a new studio in a different building to avoid construction. Last year, major renovations were being made in the building were I had my old studio (see "studio tour" post). The construction started off slowly but soon it took off and started encroaching on my space. The dust, the noise and the interruptions made it difficult to work. The landlord moved me into another building (not under construction) less than a mile away. The new studio is working out. I hope it stays that way.

Second, one of my projects caught the eye of an agent. I have been expanding it into a full product line to show a potential manufacturer. It has been non-stop work since November. I am also excited that eight of my doll designs were in the gift show in Atlanta this past January. They are in production and will be in the stores for Christmas.

In the meantime, I have decided to return to my old format. "A project A week" which worked well for me. I have a lot of ideas to post that are not commercial. I go to Atlanta on July 16th. Check back later this month for updates.

One of the first Stained Glass pieces I made many years ago.

Recently, I participated in the "Open Studio Stroll", which was held by a local arts organization in my town. Artists who had studios in the valley section of Orange and West Orange opened their studios to visitors and displayed their work. It was the first time the town held the event. The turn out was good. And it helped to promote the Luna Stage Theatre Group, which is coming to West Orange at the end of the year (or beginning of next).

I reorganized my studio plus finished a few pieces to show my guest. The most popular items are listed below. A tutorial for a few of the projects will be posted at a later date.

The Projects:

The "Sock Animals": The sock animals were the hit of the studio. People immediately gravitated to them and played with them. A couple of people sat on the ground with them. The new rabbit and the new cat are my favorites. They are unique and possess that long and lean shape I like. They're the third version I've designed since the first ones I posted here. My first pair, the argyle dog and the spotted doggy are still big favorites. I'm happy with them and enjoy making them, which shows. I took them to the Open See at Bendel's. But alas, they were not high end enough for 5th Avenue. Let's hope they fare better on Etsy.com.

The Denim Flag with a peace sign for stars.

The Denim Flag: I finished the Denim Flag just in time for the show. I had started working on it last October at the old studio. It was a stop and go process while I collected enough old jeans to make it look the way I envisioned it. The idea came from a photo of a slipcover made of old jeans sewn together in a random fashion. It was also inspired by an African American flag I saw flying over a basketball court. Someone had spray painted a flag on a sheet in black, red and green. I thought the combination of the two concepts would be interesting. To take a iconic image and interpret in a homespun way. I would like to make a second flag that is less linear and emphasizes the patchwork more.

Peace Wreath hanging on the Studio Door

The Peace Wreath: The Peace Wreath was an item I wanted to make for myself. I had read a brief article about a couple who were being sued by their homeowner's association for displaying a Peace Wreath on their home. The article did raise serious concerns for free speech but my initial thought was, "Wow. That's a cool wreath." So this year, I made one using using a fake wreath and fake garland I bought at Micheal's after Christmas on sale. There are some technical issues that need to be addressed regarding the frame. But overall, it is holding together nicely.

P.S. I'm waiting for November 1st so I can buy every leftover Halloween item I can get for my new pseudo goth line. I'm thinking of calling it, "Goth like me" or "Gothic Nerd."

Shelf Frame on display with mini chest of drawers

The Shelf Frame: I fixed the Framed Shelf from my earlier post. I used GOOP glue to secure it and drilled a picture hanger into the back. It's secure and hangs off the wall. I turned it into a shrine to creativity. The pencil (too small to see in picture above) reads, "think and suggest". The salt and pepper shakers are filled with smelling salts.

The chest of drawers to the left is from my days working at Russ Berrie Gifts as a product designer. It was also a popular item during the tour and I wish I could make more. I arrange small personal items in the drawers to look like a shadow box.

One of the Window Displays

The Window Display: I also made two window displays at the Rock-It pizzeria across the street from my studio. The first one (not pictured) had a display made with faux Stained Glass panels and four tower of cards. The second window (pictured above) displayed one of my tee shirt designs and my Halloween costume from last year. The tee shirt has a graphic image of a lady with the words "Don't Panic" covering her strategically.

The costume on the form is called "Bag Lady". The entire dress was made from plastic shopping bags. I wore with red heels and a red pillbox hat.

Next Time: And now I will whine. The tour was for two days and really it could have been just one. I was tired by the second day and the turnout was significantly smaller. Also, I should have publicized the open studio for myself more. And I can't imagine doing this every year. It is very hard work.

Overall, I'm glad I did it because I met several people interested in my designs who were full of useful information. It gave me practice in self promotion, which is important when you work independently. And success is all about showing up.

A New Studio

I have decided to continue my studio blog. The name of the blog is no longer, "A Project A Week". The new name is "Mad Jones Designs". What a mouthful. I'm seriously considering a name change but at this point everything is a work in progress.

Regarding activity in the studio itself...

I moved into the new studio in July. The studio is on the second floor of an old office building. The first floor will be renovated for a theatre company coming in October. I miss the old studio but the new place is closer and I spend more time there.

Recently, I sold four designs to a manufacturer based in China.

I'm preparing for my first home show, which I am doing with two friends. I plan to sell pillows, plush (stuffed animals) and sachets.

I'm trying to restart my old design blog called "Fly Red Fish" but I am having technical troubles with that. Let me know if you know a web designer.

And I listed a few items on E-bay. I purchased some placemats from a linen manufacturer who is retiring. I want to test the waters with pre-made items before I try to sell my own stuff on Etsy.

The above picture is a shot of the studio before I put in shelving. Below is a shot of the studio after I put in shelving. And I want to emphasize that I did it myself. I had a some help but honestly if I were accepting an award for shelving, I would thank no one but myself because I completed it myself. And after it was done, I laid down and passed out.

Lucky Number Thirteen

My personal challenge is over. I made three months worth of projects. In the beginning of June, I finished my last project and gave it to my friend, Holly. I made her two seat cushions for an outdoor bistro set. I made welting for the first time.

How I did it: Holly picked the fabric. This was great because I didn't have to guess what she wanted and it showed she was committed to the project. She gave me one of her old seat cushions. I took it apart with a seam ripper and used it as a pattern. I then read up how to make welting (or piping). I read a second book on how to piece the whole thing together. I made the ties by folding in the rough edges and using a top stitch around the edges. This was easier than sewing right sides together and pulling it inside out.

Next Time: The old fabric shifted when I pinned it to the fabric. For the second cushion, I used masking tape to hold the fabric in place.

The inside foam had a slightly awkward fit. I wanted the foam to be thick for comfort but the edges looked bulky inside the cushion.

Also, I could not find the instruction book that described how to make welting. Thank goodness, I like to look at pictures. I remembered that the fabric had to be cut on the bias. It is important that the material be cut on a bias so that it fits well over the rope. The book that I did use did not mention this key detail. Also, the formula to calculate amount of fabric needed to make welting was off. I won't mention the book by title but it is one of those pricey coffee table books masquerading as a DIY with pretty pictures of pillows. Hint, hint.

The Christmas Sock Animals

I've been swamped finishing a project for a client. Weeks ago, I made more sock animals but didn't post them. I used a Christmas theme and made argyle bears and reindeers. I thought they came out cute in an odd way. The green and blue bear is my favorite. I plan to try my luck at selling them on Etsy.

How I did it: I followed the same directions as before (see earlier post). Didn't make that many changes except I made them a bit plumper this time. I also used interfacing to make patches out of the tartan cloth for the ears and bow.

Next Time: After making the first set, I wanted to make a version that was child safe. This is an important issue for anyone selling plush that may be handled by small children. Warnings labels are not always enough. Buttons are a serious choke hazard. I replaced the buttons with patches. See the nose. The eyes will also be replaced by patches so there will be no small hard parts.

In comparison, it's a minor detail but the antlers on the deer's are flat and should be stuffed. I plan to change that for version 3.

Two days ago, I realized that I am past the three month mark and that I completed twelve projects out of thirteen. I completed a project a week for twelve weeks except for one week when I was sick. So now what? It's time to decide on how to continue my blog while I finish posting the remaining projects. Five years ago, I had a design blog called Fly Red Fish. It was a listing of useful and interesting design sites. Now, there are many other sites that list useful and interesting design sites. There are also many craft blogs sites similar to this one. I don't want to reinvent the wheel but improve it a little. I need to think about what my blog can offer in the future. It's time to think about the next act.

Heart Sachet is No. Eleven

Many years ago, I tried to make a heart shaped pillow for a friend. Trouble is that heart shaped pillows aren't always easy to make. The curve shape on top can come out looking like anything but a heart (like horns). That friend has since moved on but I continued to practice and practice until I got a shape I like. I made a heart shaped lavender sachet for this project (see above).

How I Did It: I made a heart shaped sketch that soften the point between the two concave curves (see sketch above). The center point between the two curves looks pinched and awkward when sewn at at a "right angle" Instead of pivoting the needle, blend the curves into one another turning the center into a smaller curve.

I also added a blanket stitch to the edge. There are several clips on you tube on how to do a blanket stitch but I liked the one below best. This technique held its place better because the needle was pulled through the fabric in two spots (top and bottom) before making the next stitch. Most blanket stitches skip the bottom stitch, which anchors it in place.

Next Time: I would not change a thing except I missed place my heart pattern. Oh man.

Two Fruit Pin-holders

My sewing bag is always a "mess" inside. It doesn't have enough inside pockets so when I found this little pin-holder in a bedroom drawer (see below). I decided to make a few for my bag.

How I did it: This was easy to do. Using a circle template, I made 2 two inch circles on a scrap of ultra suede. I made a third circle on a piece of white interfacing used for crafting projects. I cut the white piece slightly smaller. I slipped the white piece in between the two pieces of ultra suede and sewed all three together about eighth in from the edge. Using a piece of green ultra suede I cut out a stem and two leaves. I glued the leaves and stem over the row of stitches. Fini (see pin-holder in action below).

Next time: I thought the leaves and stems blended in too much. I tried adding a light green thread for detail. The glue didn't dry clear. Next time, I will sew it on befoe gluing.

The Sweet Smell of Number Nine

My outside projects have been taking me away from the blog even though I have been making projects. Frankly, I have lost count on where I am. But I have been more productive though the number of postings may not reflect this.

Awhile ago, I started making mini pillows. I stopped working on them because they were too small to use for anything. Later, I decided to turn them into lavender sachets (see chick sachet above). At first, I couldn't find lavender in the local stores. I tried to make my own scent by putting decorative potpourri in a coffee grinder. Bad idea. A weird smoke floated up when I lifted the lid of the grinder. Plus it stank in an artificial way. The real deal was the best way to go so I order lavender from Ebay.

How I did it: It was very simple. I cut out two four inch squares from a fuzzy green fabric. The green fabric matched a chick applique from an old pillow that had a hole in it. I cut out the chick and added the grass below the chick's feet (see below). I attached the applique to the sachet with blue embroidery thread. I also stitched a polka dot ribbon to the top. I filled the bottom and the top of the sachet with poly fill to make the corners pointed then filled the rest with lavender.

The grass below the chicks feet is thread knotted on both sides.

Next time: I wouldn't change a thing. In fact, I'm making more.

Eight Rhymes with Late.

I've been busy. Today, it is time to catch up on posting projects while working on a couple of outside projects. Plus, I am about to move to a new studio, which I saw for the second time this week. I will post more about the new studio after the move in June. But without further ado, it's time to blog about project number eight.

Aprons are expensive if you buy them from a major retailer. I almost passed out when I saw the prices. As pretty as they are you can't wear them by themselves. You need a few extra dollars to buy a skirt and a top. I decided to make my own apron (see above). I ordered the fabric from a great site called Cai's Pallette. I like this site because the prints are unusual and playful. The print I used is no longer available (sigh) but they have many more interesting prints to choose from. They also have links to free patterns. The links change so check back regularly.

How I did it: I used Butterick pattern B4945 to make the apron. The instructions are straight forward but next time I will make some minor changes. I would have put more gathers in the ruffle. Also, I had a hard time hemming the ends on the ties. I should have checked out you tube for a tutorial. But the waistband came out very clean and professional looking. See three more views below...

I have missed several weeks of posting though I have finished several new projects. I have a commission based on one of the projects posted on my blog plus I am looking at a new studio space. I will be back shortly with three new projects.

Lucky Number Seven

I'm late posting this week due to a horrible cold. I finished the project last Tuesday but I have not been feeling coherent enough to write a post. Today, I'm as good as I'm going to get. So without further ado, let's welcome the sock animals, my seventh project.

Several months ago, I purchased a book on how to make sock animals. I used to design plush toys for the gift industry so I was excited to give this a try. Later, I found a second book , which I like better. I opted to use new socks from the dollar store rather than used. The sock animals are pictured below.

Next time: It took too long to make these. And I'm starting to consider the time spent in relationship to finished results more. I wanted them to be perfectly cute and that is hard to orchestrate cuteness. You either got it or you don't. Also, I'm uncertain if I would want to sell them due to safety guidelines regarding products for children. Buttons are a serious choke hazard and I would not want to push an unsafe design.

Technical Difficulties

The sixth project did not go smoothly. It is an old picture frame over a shelf. I made the shelf from cardboard because I like the texture of cardboard when cut crosswise. I also wanted to contrast an "antique" object with a re-purposed look. The shelf was inserted into the back of the picture frame. Overall, it looked good.

But there were major construction issues. I attached the sides to the frame separately. The back of the box did not fit on the sides though I measured it carefully. I didn't take into account that the frame had probably warped and that the cardboard would warp from the glue. In the end, the back of the shelf didn't fit right and the whole shelf is hard to hang.

Next time, I will use a lightweight wood instead cardboard. And use the cardboard as a decorative element only. Also, I found an example of the shelf on apartment therapy. Their instructions were easier than what I did. If I had done a little research, I could have made the project in a day instead of two weeks. Yikes.

Project 6.1: The mini project was a success and took less than an hour. I took half of a wine glass and attached it to a toy car. I thought it would be funny to have a drink that rolls over. I made these mock-ups using supplies from the dollar store. It came out great. It was easy, cheap and quick. But drinking and driving is a serious matter. Don't drive drunk.

Some days creativity happens and other days, I struggle to form a thought. Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of Eat Pray Love, explains her theory why in a short talk from Ted.com (see above). Ted.com features short talks by a wide range of people about their field of expertise. It includes scientist, authors, artists, motivational speakers, planners, entrepreneurs, etc. The list is long and inspired. It's brain food, baby.

I made some changes to the website. Some projects do not require extremely detailed posts. Instead of posting "how-to's" here, I will be posted them on Craftster. It's all about the pictures. So let's get started...

My 5th project is seat cushions (see above). I have 4 old-fashioned, wood folding chairs in the studio. I like the look of a frail, simple chair with a large seat cushion so I clip out pictures of wood chairs with cushions. So I decided to make 4 cushions for my chairs.

The rose cushion I made is my favorite because of the ties (see above). The ties are made of satin wired ribbon. The dark red complements the red rose print of the cushion and the brown color of the wood of the chair. The ties were made extra long for a dramatic touch.

The best inspiration for the attic meets artist look is Charleston. Charleston was the country home in England of Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell, members of the Bloomsbury Group. Bloomsbury was an art movement in the early 1900's. (Think Virginia Woolf.) They produced exquisite handpainted items for their home and produced rugs and ceramics for clients (see below). Big influence on modern design though not well known in the U.S. (unless you're a designer).

The Fourth Blog Project

The fourth blog project is a draft-stopper.

But first, a mini-rant. In the past, when I was asked by a friend to make small projects for them it usually ended up not happening (or a mess) for one reason. That reason being their project was too vague. The person could not describe what they wanted. This led to lots of arm waving, looking off into space, and the constant repetition of the phrase “you know what I mean.” Meanwhile, I would give them the finished project and get a look like I just gave them gift-wrapped roadkill. Overall lack of communication can also reek havoc on a freelance project.

Lately, things have changed dramatically. People are expressing themselves more clearly. It may be because of all the design shows on cable or the craft sites on the internet. But now, I am handed swatches, or patterns, or thumbnails, or a real clue. I’m still able to be creative but now everyone is on the same page. Which leads me to this next project...

How I did it: My friend asked me to make draft-stoppers for three doors. They described that they needed an extra strip of fabric on the draft-stopper so that it could be attached to the door. They even gave me a tube to use! Clearly explained and clearly understood.

Stuff the inside of the tube with poly fill so it won't bend. I could have used any scrap material (rags, shipping peanuts, etc) for this purpose.

Then covered the tube with a thick scrap fabric (I used polar fleece to give it added thickness and strength). I measured the roll against the polar fleece for size. Cut it out and sew a seam down the edge joining the two longest sides together. Slide tube inside. I used double stick tape on both ends of the tube to keep it from sliding out.

Next, I made the fabric cover. I used leftover upholstery fabric from another project. Measure the tube for length and add 1.5 inches to one side before cutting. The seam allowance will equal a half inch on each side. For the width, fold the fabric in half and estimated how much will go under the door and around (about 6 inches for the ones I made). Then cut the fabric leaving one side folded. Sew the two shortest sides together.

I place the tube inside against the fold and sewed the whole thing closed on the machine.

It resembled a flange hem on a pillow when finished.

Next time: It was better to sew the longest side together first (plus one short side) instead of both short sides first. It meant less work closing the longest hem on the machine with the tube inside. To close the short end with the tube inside, I stitched together one half of a short end, slipped the tube inside, then sewed the rest of the hem closed on the machine.

My friend was happy with the results and immediately attached it to the door. The tube was place on one side of the door while the other side was stapled to the opposite side. The draft-stoppers worked out nicely. The door can be opened and closed without having to put the the draft-stopper back in place.

It has been a pleasure working on recent projects with my friends because they are better informed regarding designs and are able to express what they want. In turn, I can tell them what I can provide and estimate a realistic time frame. This experience especially helps with dealing with freelance clients.

Project 4.10:

I had extra time this week to work on another project. It’s not a weekly project because it’s graphic and this site emphasizes my 3-D work but I do like to keep up on my 2-D skills.

Link: Paper dolls were my favorite toy when I was growing up. I enjoyed drawing new clothes and making houses for them. I even drew a few comics about their adventures. Unfortunately, I didn’t save any of this (damn you, puberty). To make up for lost time, I design dolls using dollmaker. I can save my new dolls to my computer so they don’t end up in the trash. Second childhood? Try fourth.

My first project - Ribbon Topiary

Today, I realized that I did not post a final picture of my first project 100% completed. The finished results were good but I'm not in this romantic phase anymore. My sketch was more whimsical but when converting a doodle into a 3-D object, one risks losing the ethereal quality of a quick sketch. I've also noticed that my projects are very "fem" a.k.a. "girlie". I do also work in hard materials. After tomorrow's project post, I will complete one of my wood projects for next week to add variety.

Link: Speaking of sketches, Doodlers Anonymous is a site worth looking at. Some great projects come from a humble doodle plus it is an inspiration for those of us who yearn to draw daily. Great value in being humble things.

My Third Project

The third blog project is appliqués on tee shirts. Years ago, I started making tee shirts. Since I didn’t have screen printing tools, I decided to cut up old tee shirts and use the words and pictures to make new messages (see below). Also, it was a great way to save the messages from my old worn tees by sewing them onto new shirts. It came out pretty good but I ran out of steam when I ran out of old tee shirts. Some I finished but some I didn’t. For this project, I completed the shirts.

Appliqué tee that I made years ago

How I did it: I started by collecting old tee shirts from home and from the thrift store. I cut the graphics and words out of the old tee shirts and pieced them together to make new messages. To make the cut out pieces into appliqués, use iron on adhesive for appliqués from the craft store. Following the instructions, iron on to the back of each cut-out. It will stiffen the cut-out so it doesn’t sag on the shirt. Also, it is easier to adhere before sewing. Iron on the cut-outs to the tee shirt you plan to wear. I used a grid ruler to make sure the cutouts were centered. After you have it all ironed down, use a zig zag stitch to secure the to the shirt.

I used the “old” from navy plus a car graphic for this tribute to my piece o’crap car.

This tee shirt had Chinese characters plus “Ath. Dept.” printed on it, which I kept.I added the “US” above the original message.

This graphic was from a kid’s tee shirt. Now it fits an adult.

This studded rock appliqué came from a sleeveless purple tee shirt that had to be from the 80’s because it was ugly-fierce. I cut out the “rock” and transferred it to a wearable black tee.

This is my favorite. The angel is originally from a Renaissance painting that was reproduced on a huge tee. I added the “bad” from another tee shirt to make this juxtaposition.

This is my least favorite. I thought it would be funny to sew a word for a color on a black tee. Well that was before Victoria Secrets came out with their pink line. It’s like the episode of “My Name is Earl” where Joy is spray painting “JUICY” on to the back of some walmart sweat pants. I will never wear this but it’s done.

Next time: I’ll work a little faster. Like a several years faster. I had a good concept but now, it’s been out there. I have more tee shirts but I plan to design some new projects for the rest.

If you would like to try, there are a lot of books on redesigning tee shirts. Most are so-so and the projects say “home-made”. Except for Tease. Tease is a book with many really good ideas for redesigning tee-shirts into usable clothing and accessories. The editor asked several established designers to contribute ideas. The results are stylish, usable and wearable. Best book for tee designs.

Link: Originally, I wanted to sell my tee shirts but I didn’t have a good place to sell them. I tried a few flea markets but people where not willing to pay 20 dollars for a tee there. But now there is on-line selling. Etsy is the best site for buying original art and craft products from a wide range of artists and designers all over the world. Product includes clothes, paintings, ceramics, jewelry and more. It’s worth a look.

Alert: First Domino, now Craft! Craft magazine has printed its last issue. Let’s hope the website will remain and thrive. They have a great blog for Japanese craft magazines, which are hard to find outside of New York ;) I can live without Circuit City but this rots.

My second project

My second blog project is a sweater redesign. I have been interested in redesigning old clothing since I read an article about a group of designers who did this for a gallery show in New York back in the 80's. It's now called reconstructed clothing or "recon" for short. I wanted to try it with a sweater since I hate the way they fit. I've been collecting sweaters from Goodwill but I used an old gold sweater I brought years ago (see below).

How I did it: Basically, you are turning the bottom hem of the sweater into an empire waist for a closer fit. First, you cut the sweater in half at the line where the empire seam would be on your body. Flip the lower half around and sew the bottom hem to the empire seam you just created. The sweater is now fitted due to the empire.

I found the instructions for this recon on Craftster (I give credit where credit is due). I pretty much followed the instructions posted except I moved the bustline up higher so the empire doesn't sit below the bust. A higher empire is more flattering for me. I posted pictures below of the project but click the link above for full instructions.

Next time: I will use matching thread, not white. Now, I have to add trim to cover the thread on the center front. I would make this again. Not a portfolio piece because it is not my original concept. But definitely worth the effort because it gave me some original ideas like the jean skirt pictured below.

After cutting the pants in half, I covered that overlapping triangle crotch thing with the bottom half of the pants. My skirt will look like a faux kilt when complete. Not in a hurry to finish this one though. Have to shed those winter pounds first. But my weight is still lower than any number on the stimulus package. Ha.

I want to emphasize that this goal to finish "a project a week" is not for the sake of cranking out mediocre design projects as fast as I can so I can set a record. My goal is to complete the unfinished projects that I have collected over the years so I can move on. I have new projects in the works but the unfinished projects are a millstone around my neck.

I have not finished several projects because I choke before I finish the last step. Subconsciously, I feel that the last step will ruin it so I don't take it. One wrong brushstroke with permanent black ink, one squeeze of the glue gun in the wrong spot, one irrecoverable cut with the scissors and it is over. What has taken months to complete in a split second becomes crap. So, I procrastinate...

Now, I have decided to be decisive. To hell with it. Damn if I do, damn if I don't so I might as well do it. If it turns to crap, call it a learning experience and start over.

First Project

My first blog project is a ribbon topiary. Many years ago, I had made one for a gift company and the prototype was sent to Hong Kong (see below). I always wanted to make one for myself and I started this one a long time ago. I didn't finish it because I did not have a container. A few weeks ago, I went to Goodwill and found the green glass container in the picture.

How I did it: I bought floral buds made of ribbon at the craft store and hot glued them to a styrofoam heart. I made a hole in the base and wrapped two "lollipop" sticks with brown floral tape. Then I hot glued the stems into the heart. I glued green foam into the container and made a hole in the center to hold the heart.

I am trying to tea dye the white ribbon at the base to "match" the floral buds. Unfortunately, it is poly and not easy to dye with tea. I may have to try ink. This is a quick project so I am already focusing on what I can do next. Maybe I'll have two this week?

Actually, it began in October of 2008. That is when I quit my day job and started working in my design studio full time. I have been slow to finish my own projects so I have decided to give myself a deadline. A project a week for the next three months and each finished project will be posted here. I am not attempting to crank out projects but challenge myself to complete a body of work that has been sitting on the sidelines.

I got this deadline idea from the countless drawing a day sites. I decided on a weekly deadline because I work in 3-D. I am a product designer who specializes in home decor accessories, craft design and apparel items. I enjoy making craft items and reconstructive clothing. I primarily make things by hand on a small and large scale.

Blogging has been a bit of a challenge too. But I will learn as I go.

And so it begins...
